Whistle Stop Cafe has been in Fox Lake since 1996, which makes it the longest-running breakfast anchor within short walking distance of the Metra platform. The Sunday-morning window between a Saturday event and a Metra departure is exactly what this place is for.

Famous Freddie's Roadhouse is the outlier. It is not a downtown walk, but on the day of the In-Water Wood Boat Show, it is the destination. Plan around it, not through it.

Millennium Park at the heart of downtown is not a restaurant, but it is the plaza that connects everything above and the staging point for the Village's winter Festival of Lights on November 28 and Santa's Workshop on December 12. Worth remembering as summer runs out.
